Eating Antioxidant Rich Berries

When consumed, antioxidants fight for us—trying to knock out cell damage that could hurt our bodies. Some of the best antioxidants can be found in whole foods, especially colorful fruits and vegetables. The good news is these antioxidants can be extremely delicious to eat—we’re talking about nature’s sweet treats, berries! Let’s explore three of our favorite berry options that work to rid our bodies of cell damage:

Blueberries

  • These are one of the healthiest berries for the body! One cup of fresh blueberries has around 10,000 antioxidants — protecting against cancer, aging, and damage to DNA.
  • They’re also nutrient-dense, providing us with Vitamins C and K, Manganese, and Dietary Fiber. These vitamins and minerals boost the immune system, help blood clot properly, and promote bone and muscle strength.
  • Blueberries are highin soluble fiber, which can prevent or reduce the risks of heart disease.
  • Since they’re fairly low in sugar when compared to other fruits, they can aid in blood sugar management, lowering triglycerides.

Blackberries

  • These delicious berries are rich in several antioxidants — for instance, anthocyanins! Anthocyanins lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart disease, prevent neurological disease, and slow cancer growth.
  • Blackberries also contain high levels of Vitamin C and K, helping the body with blood clotting and collagen production for wound healing.
  • Vitamin A is also present, supporting the immune system and eyesight.
  • Of course, blackberries are also high in fiber, playing a crucial role in regulating blood sugar levels and sugar consumption.
  • Lastly, the polyphenols found in blackberries have proven to have a positive impact on cognitive and motor skills in rats. More research will be done to determine if humans experience similar positive outcomes. So, in the years to come, we’ll find out if they improve our brain health, too!

Strawberries

  • These berries are full of Vitamin C, a well-known immunity booster, cancer fighter, and collagen producer! They contain Ellagic Acid, a phytochemical also shown to suppress cancer cell growth.
  • The antioxidants in strawberries also fight against bad cholesterol and they provide an anti-inflammatory effect, which is good for the heart and any achy joints.

You’ll receive the greatest benefit from raw, fresh, frozen, and organic produce! Also, keep in mind heat can harm antioxidants — so baking berries is less beneficial than eating them raw.

There are so many berries that are low in sugar, high in fiber, and full of antioxidants. Discover your favorites and add them to your plate for an easy and delicious way to provide your body with helpful vitamins, minerals, and disease-fighting nutrients!
